I'm a Rule Breaker!!!

I've been messing around yet again with a painting from my early days.  I painted it from a photograph that I loved but never could get it to look quite right.  It's super campy and fun, but the flowers just didn't turn out and I keep working at it and working at it with no success.

Until today...

I'm pretty sure there's some rule out there that says no real artist uses sharpies...  but I love 'em!  I love the cool look I get whenever I use them to add some definition or just a dash or two of sharpness.  Oh well, I never really thought of myself as a professional artist anyway, so I'll do as I please!!!  The more years I get under my belt, the less rules matter to me at all.

So here are the before, during and after photos of my field of sunflowers painting.

YIKES!  What a mess!!

Hmmm, better but still no cigar...

CAMPY!!!!!!!

I lightened the sky, softened the trees and used a black Sharpie to add more definition to the flowers.  I wish I could take a better photo because it looks awesome in person, but you get the idea.  Here's to breaking all the rules!

"There is no key to happiness, the door is always open."

Cheers!

  1. There are no nules in art. Your art is your own and I think it turned out great!

  2. It looks like you took out a tree and added a ladder too ;) I love it! The sharpie really did the trick with those flowers. I've been wanting to make some art myself thanks for the inspiration. You are so talented!

  9. The defining of the sunflowers really made the flowers pop. And lightening the sky had an amazing effect. Your final painting is gorgeous. Aren't you glad you dug it out and worked on it again?

  10. I don't think there are any rules in the art world - it's all so subjective and one man's palette knife is another man's sharpie, I say!! You did a great job bringing out the depth of the flowers with your sharpie!

  11. When you get as old as me, you will learn the rule makers are not what or who you thought!! You will learn to break them without concern. After all many successful people break the rules!! Your piece is amazing, I too love sharpies and incorporate them into my large canvases!! Hurry up and check out the sharpie contest, maybe have a piece in the sharpie video!! Deadline is the 6th though!! Good luck!!

  14. They turned out great! I guess you can call this mixed media, as long as it is acid free, you can pile on top and have fun! (And then again, if it isn't acid free, you still can have fun!)

  18. I don't believe there are any rules in art, but the rules for life definitely include "Break some rules" and "make a mess"--

    Go sharpies!

  21. Break away! If the Sharpie rule exists- it needs to be broken. Your sky color change and the Sharpies on the flowers were fabulous decisions because the your final painting is absolutely wonderful!

  23. Hi Anne, In my opinion, rules are for amateurs. I like the end result. The sunflowers have nice definition now.
