The Main Bathroom Gets a Makeover

Yes, I'm still at it.  Attempt number three to make this bathroom look and feel more spa-like in spite of the fact that I hate the tile and the floor and the tile clash.  Why anyone would think these two would go together is beyond me...

So,  here is the bathroom from the realtor's ad:

and here is my first attempt at changing it:
Lights are changed, walls & cupboard are painted Ben Moore Sundial, new sunshine yellow towels and a yellow shower curtain with yellow accessories.

and here is my second attempt:
New mirror, new hanging rack for towels, brown towels, brown shower curtain and brown accessories.

and now for the third time:

The walls may look yellowish in these photos, but they are off-white.  I painted the storage shelving and the trim in the wall colour.  I went shopping with a specific shower curtain pattern and colour in mind AND I FOUND IT!!  How often does that happen??!  I plan to buy some contrasting towels in the burlap/beige shade from the shower curtain and will be edging the curtain with burlap or white so it touches the floor.  I spray painted the lights and bought new shades.  The spray paint was chrome, but what came out of that can is more like Wizard of Oz tin man shade.  Not what I thought it would be, but I have to say that since I smudged it up with fingerprints (unintentionally!), I like it much better!  I painted the Ikea hook rack and the chrome mirror frame and then distressed them both.  The mirror frame had a grey metal base that matches the lights - YAY!  I even painted my lantern!

So what do you think?  Hit or miss?  When I walk into the room now, I actually feel really good - I think my poor bathroom has found its way into the cottage look of the rest of the house.  Someday the tile will change and that floor will come up, but for now I'm happy.

Have a happy and creative week!

  2. Ahhh, much better and closer to your cottage feel.

Have you considered painting the tile in the bath area? It CAN be done. The floor tile is really nice already.

You know what I would love to see in there? Your markor shelf that you painted. The existing storage unit looks a little too linear, if that makes sense.

  3. You've put a lot into getting it right and you like the feel in there...that's what matters. I can't figure out what to do with my bathroom, so I have done nothing. Kudos for going for it even without some of the finishes you want. It looks great!

  10. Anne...third time is the charm!...I love the shower curtain and the colors....Would you consider backing the cabinet with a coordinating print with the curtain?
Like combining the green and your signature aqua...?
I love the bathroom the third time around!!!

  16. I love knowing that I'm not the only one who has to experiment with decor a few times before it finally "fits." The bath looks great! I'd love to have you link this up to Titus 2 Tuesday on Cornerstone Confessions.

  19. Third time lucky, it's perfect! I love it, it's hard when you have a base you don't like and have to work around it but you certainly did it! To be honest I love the white towels I think they give it the 'spa' look to be honest, beige may just take that away? Just a thought, hope you don't mind me sayin'

  20. I like it!!!!! Nice and airy. I have seen worst tile patterns and matches in bathrooms. Yours looks a little tame. Maybe they were going to change the tile in the shower before they moved, but they ran out of time???? You are too funny--Tin man color :)

  29. I think the bathroom looks great, Anne. What a huge improvement from the real estate ad! I don't know how the tiles and floor look "in person", but they look really nice with your new "spa treatment" for the room.

  36. Looks MUCH better now, Anne. Are you aware that there are several refinishing kits that you can buy to change your tile color?

You might want to check this video out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wptjSPQ2HFg&feature=related . I'm not sure if they sell this particular kit at the home improvement stores, but I know you can purchase it through Amazon. Rust-Oleum also makes a similar kit. Question is, are you up for more painting? ;)

Thanks for linking to Time Travel Thursday again this week. ;)

  37. I'd say "3rd times the charm;" it looks beautiful, Anne. Isn't it frustrating when you know something is off but can't figure out what it is? I certainly have those moments. Usually the solution comes to me in the middle of the night, & I'm trying to write myself a note on the toilet paper roll in the dark....lol! Great job!

  39. Each attempt is getting better and better.. I think you may have found a winner (well, until you can remove one set of the tile)

Compared to the pics when you bought it though.. it is 10,000x nicer! Great work!

  40. What a lovely space! I adore your sink! I want on alike that for our half bath but they are so pricey. At least for a half bath!;)

  42. Third time is a Charm, they say! I love the bathtub pic the most - all that white and the fabulous shower curtain certainly lighted up those tiles! And the mirror is the perfect shape and size.

  43. I love the final products. Isn't it funny how it can take awhile to see what the room really wants to look like. Especially when you are working with someone else's tile choices. You did a fabulous job! Thanks for the inspiration!

  44. Hi Anne, There is always an improvement in each update you do. I like the new shower curtain especially. Next time round, and I assume that there will be a next time around because you love decorating so, I would replace the cupboard with something lighter and more open. I would choose a decorative metal shelf unit like the one near the window, but on a bigger scale. I got one at HomeSense for about $125. I'd hide the things you don't want people to see in covered baskets and put the rest on display. You could even paint the metal to have a pretty patina. I think this might open the space up.

  45. Oh, definitely a HIT! It looks just great...

  59. I like this Anne. It's very pretty and cottagey. Nicely done. Long term, I think the tile around the tub is fine. It has a kind of terra cotta look in the photos and that type of tile is very versatile. Just about any decorating style works with it. Rather than changing out the floor tile, I'd consider a large area rug to cover most of the floor. You certainly have the room for it in front of the commode and sink, all the way to the tub, and it could really change the feel of the room. Whatever you do, it will be very special. You have the touch. Blessings.

  66. I can so relate to the trial and error of redesign. But, I have to say, in this case, third time's the charm. The new accessories really tie the tile and floor together as well as soften the look. I think it looks great. Your feature at Creativley Living is well deserved!
